When the mask fails,
reach for a
simpler tool.

Most beginners who "can't equalize" have simply been handed the wrong tool. Here’s the protocol that fixes it — right there on the buoy, in the same session, with nothing more than a dry goggle and a nose clip.

The Problem

Equalizing head-down with a mask is not one skill.

It is seven actions performed upside-down, on a single breath, while the student's nervous system is trying to tell them something is very wrong.

The seven-step stack

A first-time student must do all of this, in order, without losing the breath.

And in between every attempt —
air leaks out.

When a nervous beginner releases the nose-pinch before the soft palate has fully closed, air escapes through the nose. Every failed attempt is a leak.

By 5 meters, an anxious student has lost enough surface-equivalent air that Valsalva itself stops working — long before the depth it could otherwise carry them.

The Solution

Remove the obstacle. Hand the student a simpler tool.

With a Mask

One hand occupied

One hand is busy pinching, and the mask plus that pinching hand both cover the nose. The soft palate is hidden and the instructor cannot see the nose flare — so there's no way to tell whether the student is actually moving air the right way.

With Goggles + Nose Clip

Both hands free

Nose visible. Soft palate diagnosable. Equalization becomes a gentle nasal release — the softest technique there is.

The Technique — Descent

Three steps, in order. Release → Yawn → Exhale.

Teach the softest mechanic first. Escalate only if the previous step didn't open the ears. The order matters because it preserves natural Frenzel users and prevents the Valsalva habit that stops most divers at 10–15 m.

Why this order matters. A natural Frenzel user can equalize with no diaphragm engagement — tell them to actively exhale first and you build the exact Valsalva habit they will later have to unlearn. A natural releaser can equalize with no muscle engagement at all — tell them to push and you teach them to work harder than they need to. Lead with release; escalate to a yawn (which opens the soft palate passively); fall back to a gentle nasal exhale only if the first two don't open the ears.

Some students never need the exhale at all. A natural Frenzel user, or a diver lucky enough to have BTV (Béance Tubaire Volontaire — voluntary, hands-free tube opening), already has open eustachian tubes. For them the tubes simply stay open, so there's no air to push and no exhale step to add. If a student equalizes effortlessly on release alone, don't make them exhale — you'd only be teaching a habit they don't need.

Try this first

Release

"Take a full breath.
Hold for three to five seconds.
Now — very gently — release a little air out your nose against the clip.
Don't push. Just open up and let it go."

If the ears pop — stop here. You have a natural releaser. Do not upgrade; you would only teach them to work harder than they need to.

If no pop

Try a yawn

"Same gentle feeling — but this time, try to yawn, with your mouth closed.
Like the start of a yawn, soft and slow. The air will find its way."

This opens the soft palate — the structure most often blocking air flow on a stuck beginner. The yawn-feel reliably accomplishes Frenzel-like mechanics passively, without active push. Belly stays soft.

Only if steps 1 & 2 failed

Gentle exhale

"Still no pop? Now gently exhale a little air out your nose against the clip.
Just a small steady push. Don't force it."

This adds diaphragmatic pressure — Valsalva mechanics. Introducing it only as a last resort means students who don't need Valsalva never learn to rely on it.


The Technique — Ascent

Bring the air back home.

Air leaves on the way down. Air comes back on the way up. With a sealed nose clip, expanding sinus and ear air needs to flow back through the soft palate and glottis — and a gentle nasal inhale against the clip opens both structures automatically, without the student needing to know the anatomy.

"As you come up, gently inhale against the nose clip.
Just a soft little breath — don't force it.
Same gentle feeling as down — reversed."

A gentle nasal inhale automatically opens the glottis and soft palate — air cannot reach the lungs through the nose without passing through both. The student breathes; the anatomy follows.

If ears feel full or painful

Swallow or jaw

"Swallow, or move your jaw side to side.
Those open the tube from the other side.
If pressure won't release, descend a meter and try again slowly."

Toynbee maneuver and lateral jaw movement open the Eustachian tubes from the pharyngeal side — the rare safety fallback for a reverse block. Not needed on most ascents.

Never force either direction.

The Diagnostic

Read the nose flare.

For the first time, the instructor can see the soft palate state from the outside. The nose is uncovered; the hand is not pinching. When the student releases air correctly against the nose clip, the nostrils flare outward.

  • Equalization is happening or imminent
  • Green light — continue the descent

  • 99% of the time: tension, not anatomy
  • Pushing harder will not fix it
  • Bring student up, talk them down
  • Do NOT descend until flare appears

The Protocol

Five phases. One session. One buoy.

Under twenty minutes from the failed mask to a confident mask.

Allow three mask attempts.
No more.

RECOGNIZE
Same depth, tension, self-deprecation. Student is stuck.

SWITCH
Goggles first, then nose clip. Frame as simpler way.

DESCEND
Level 1 EQ: gentle nasal release after 3–5 sec breath-hold. Exhale only if needed.

RETURN
After 3–5 clean dives: back to the mask. Same session.
The single most important rule

After 3–5 successful goggle dives,
go back to the mask — immediately.

Every agency certification requires mask proficiency. Most travel destinations rent only masks, no goggles. The body-memory of a successful equalization is fresh — that is the window it transfers through. The goggles are scaffolding, not a destination.

The Exceptions

When the mask may never be the right tool.

For most students the goggle rescue is a bridge back to the mask. For a few, the goggles are the right tool for life — and it is the instructor's job to recognize which.

Mustache

Well-documented cause of chronic mask-seal leaks along the upper lip. If the student will not shave a thin strip, FREEQ is the correct tool — not a crutch.

Face shape & contour

Narrow faces, prominent brow ridges, high or low nose bridges all cause chronic sealing problems across multiple mask models.

Medical exceptions

Prior eye surgery, glaucoma, history of significant mask squeeze — refer to a diving-aware physician. FREEQ eliminates the squeeze mechanism entirely.

A note on water temperature

The rescue works best with lighter gear in warmer water, where the mask is the only thing in the student’s way. It still works in cold water — just account for a few extra things: a stronger mammalian dive reflex, a hooded suit and gloves that change how the goggle and clip seal, more mucus, and thermal stress competing for the student’s focus.

Agency standards

Working with the agencies, not around them.

We have spoken with most major freediving agencies about this protocol, and we continue to reach out to more as the work progresses. The goal is collaborative — to have the technique recognized as a legitimate teaching intervention without compromising the agency requirements that govern certification skill demonstrations.

The safety freediver stays in mask per agency standards, regardless of what equipment the student is using. All required certification skills — check dives, rescue drills, safety demonstrations, the full dive to course depth — must be completed in mask. The goggle-clip rescue is a training aid to unblock a stuck beginner; it is not a substitute for mask proficiency.

Instructors: check your specific agency's current equipment and supervision standards before using goggles in any supervised open-water session.
