Evolve Polished Stainless Steel Speargun Shaft - 4 Sharkfin Tabs
*** 7 mm (~9/32") in stock, ships immediately! ***
(7.5 mm (~19/64") and 8 mm (~5/16") coming soon)
17-4 PH stainless steel, heat treated to H900, polished to a mirror finish over the full length and passivated. Strong, straight-tracking, with a quick-entry pencil point, four welded sharkfin tabs, Euro notch and single flopper. 7 mm (~9/32"), six lengths. 7.5 mm (~19/64") and 8 mm (~5/16") coming soon.
- Strong and straight. 17-4 PH heat treated to H900 — hardness up to HRC 46, yield strength 1,170 MPa (170 ksi) minimum to spec — so the shaft flexes and springs back instead of taking a set. Polished over the full length, so a bend shows in the reflection before it shows in the shot.
- Quick-entry pencil point. A long conical point that enters clean, leaves a small hole for the flopper to hold, and stands up to rock. Touches up with a file in a few passes.
- Four welded sharkfin tabs. Three at the tail for two or three bands, one forward for a short-range position and for staging a long roller band. Polished with the shaft, drilled. One band per tab.
- Single flopper. Pin-pressed, engraved evolve · Kona, Hawaii.
- Mirror polish, passivated. Resists pitting in salt water, rinses clean, no plating to wear through at the tabs or the muzzle.
- Euro notch, line hole at the tail. Fits Euro-mechanism guns, open or closed muzzle.

Why polished
Most shafts are ground, or ground and plated. This one is polished and passivated. On stainless steel a smoother surface resists pitting better: there are fewer grooves for salt to sit in and the passive layer is stronger. It rinses clean, there is no plating to wear through at the tabs or the muzzle, it runs smoother through the muzzle and the track, and a bend shows in the reflection before it shows in the shot.
Strength
17-4 PH is a precipitation-hardening stainless steel. Heat treated to H900 it carries a minimum yield strength of 1,170 MPa (170 ksi) and a hardness up to HRC 46, so under band load, a fish or a hit on the reef the shaft flexes and springs back instead of taking a set. There is no coating to crack when it flexes. Before a dive, sight down the polish: a straight shaft reads as one unbroken line of reflection.
The point
A long conical pencil point. It enters quickly and pushes the flesh aside rather than cutting it, so the hole stays small and the flopper holds, and it stands up to a rock hit better than a cut edge. Touch it up with a flat file or stone in a few passes, turning the shaft as you go.
Using the tabs
Two-band guns load on the rear two tabs; three-band guns on the rear three. The forward tab is a shorter, lower-power position for close reef shots, and a first stage when loading a long roller band before moving the wishbone back to the tail. One band loads on one tab.
